How do YOU paint your models? Any new tips or ideas for me?
« on: March 02, 2012, 08:56:22 PM »

Ok guys so after being out of the hobby for so long I wanted to see how people paint their models now.
I used to use enamels with airbrush thinner out of my airbrush. Now there is alot of talk about acrylics and oils (for weathering) etc.

I'd like to try acrylics, they seem easy and I know they have alot of different colors at my hobby shops.
Ive heard of thinning them with rubbing alcohol (not sure what you chaps across the pond call it) or water and clean up is a breeze.
Also wondering the steps some people take as far as coating them goes. paints and finishes (glosses, dull coats etc)

Id personally like to get away from enamels but want to see what other people use and maybe get some ideas, maybe learn a new, easier way to do things...
So how do YOU finish your models?

-Jesse

Hi Jesse and welcome back to modelling.

Acrylics seem to be the paint of choice both water and solvent based.  I think Im safe in saying that most the guys on here use acrylics, particularly water based.  Its easier, cleaner and they are odourless.  Tamiya acrylic paints are particularly smelly.  I use them for the big areas, such as vehicles and basecoats.
After that I use a mix of paints for detailing, figures etc.

I still use enamels on figures, though I`m splashing out (excuse the pun) on those lovely Vallejo/Model color water based sets soon.  Ive also just bought Revell aqua color, which seem pretty good.

I also use oils (tubes) and artist acrylics (tubes) for weathering and textures.

Then, there is a whole world of pigments and washes, for which Trackpads/DOA is quite rightly famous for.

As for a tip, try this: I make my own pigment using the ashes of burned incense mixed with windsor and newton tube acrylics or oils of the relevent colour. It worked particularly well on my Stug iii exhausts (I think  :P)

I really can't help you currently. I myself have so many older paints (acrylics, enamals, water based, solvent based, spray bombs from auto motive engine to floral paints, etc) and really haven't purchased much new stuff if fact only have 1 bottle of pigment and it's a Vallejo German Sand that I have yet to use. As for washes for weathering I use Oils both solvent and water based tubes, cheap water based acrylic craft paint and water color paints, I guess you can say I'm cheap but I hate to not use what I have on hand, although new purchases are planned in 2013 if not earlier......

Well....I use just about anything and everything.
I am ashamed to say it but I have yet to use DOA paints...As you know I just got my supply back and will be using them soon!!
I first prime most of my figs and models flat white...I think this allows colors to show off more brilliant than other primers i.e. black or grey.I use the cheapest spray bombs I can find...
I used to use enamels like most...bit now I have switched to acrylics.I have also used oils and will be getting back to using them as well..just got them back as well.
Pigments...DOA!!!

Hi Jesse i use water based paint only enamils give me a pounding head ache and D.O.A paint and pigments, But i do advise usin up what you got mate rather than buying all new stuff, as you are already used to them.Untl you get fully back ino the hobby and start trying tech's that can only be done with curtain things / brands or you need a specific colou you dont already have, and slowly replace every thing, not every one has a ab and a lot of brands need messing about with to spray, i use the vallejo stuff to brush paint buut D.O.A to spray as the vallejo does not spray unless you buy there ab stuff, its one of those things that each modeler does diffrent and has diffrent likes dislikes about diffrent brands.
